Here it is then, my birthday interview. It's not my first time, but I can't help but get nervous all the same. I don't mind being celebrated, but birthdays here are always such a noisy affair... |
??? |
What's not to like about stuffin' yourself silly and gettin' a bunch of presents? It's the best! |

I know that voice... |

Ruggie Bucchi at your service. A very happy birthday, Trey! |

Thanks, Ruggie. Don't grill me too hard today. |

I got your back. I'll get it over with quick too, so you can get to diggin' into the party spread! |

Hah, I'm glad to hear it. |

Right then, first question. Do you consider flight magic one of your strong suits or weak points? |

Oof, flying? It's definitely not a strong suit, I can say that much. My grades aren't terrible, but they're nothing to write home about either. |

Really? But I thought you play in interdorm spelldrive matches. Your flying must be good enough to make the roster at least. |

I have been in those matches, yes. But my grades in flying are still just average. I only participate in spelldrive because my dormmates insist. |

Seriously? Man, everyone in my dorm is always clamorin' for a spot. |

Same. It gets quite competitive. I don't really care about all that. I think whoever wants to play should be allowed to. But when Cater was putting together the roster, he said that if the whole team is made up of those types, it gets too hard to control. |

Yeah, our school's got a lotta folks who just want personal glory. |

Right. So of course it's the guy who doesn't care at all that ends up cajoled into playing. |

Gotcha. Well, how'd you end up doin' in the match, anyway? |

I was pretty forgettable. I'm not good enough to score on my own, so I just tried to support everyone else. Passing to areas of low coverage, or running interference for teammates carrying the disc. Stuff like that. |

heh. Little things that make a team run smoothly, huh? I'm sure that's why Cater picked you! |

Hm... I suppose that makes sense. You're right that there wasn't much friction on the team with me there, but I don't think I did much to contribute to winning. If the other team decided to target me, I'd have been easy pickings. Honestly, I think I'm most suited to just cheering everyone on from the stands. |

'Kay, next question. Describe a time when you were glad you were able to use magic. The floor is yours. |

Put me on the spot, why don't you... Ah, but I've thought of something. When I saved some eggs from splattering all over the floor. |

Nice one! Wastin' food is a big no-no! Surprised you'd make a mistake like that, though, what with your cookin' skills. |

I know. Usually I'm better about making sure everyone knows to be careful. I don't know what i was thinking. |

Go easy on yourself, man. From the sounds of it, it wasn't even your fault. Were you doin' some group cookin' or somethin'? |

Do you know about the unbirthday parties we throw in Heartslabyul? There's always massive amounts of sweets, and we each have to take a turn being in charge of baking them. Anyway, the underclassmen who happened to be in charge this last time begged me to teach them how to make the cakes. |

Ah, so was it one of them that dropped the eggs? |

That's right. If I'd only been instructing one person, I could have stayed by their side and prevented their mistake. But I had a number of people to manage, which made things more difficult. When the egg carton slipped out of my dormmate's hand, I was too far away to intervene. If we'd had to go out and buy more, we'd never have made it in time for the party. Luckily, I leapt into action and used magic to save the eggs. I've never felt more relieved. If I'd reacted a hair slower, quite a few eggs would have been wasted, and we'd have been stuck cleaning the floor. |

Man, I hate even THINKIN' about grub getting wasted. Glad that tragedy was averted. Bet that wasn't the only trouble those dormmates of yours gave you though, was it? |

Ahaha... Well, I definitely was unprepared for how difficult teaching so many at once would be. They managed it in the end, but it's not like I'll always be around to pick up their slack. Not to mention if they'd just been a little more attentive, I'd never have needed to resort to magic in the first place. Next time I'll have to impress upon them the importance of remaining calm. |

And here we go—the final question! What do you hope to do in the next year? |

Deepen my appreciation of the arts, I suppose? Whenever I return home I always make sure to visit the art museum. |

Man, you'll never find ME in an art museum! Gotta pay to get in and there isn't even any food! |

I don't really care about paintings and statues either. I'm doing it more out of necessity. |

Whoa, you mean you pay money to do something you don't even LIKE? |

I have to do SOMETHING about my grades in art. The written exams are one thing, but besides that I struggle with any tasks requiring imagination. Quite a fatal flaw for an aspiring mage, wouldn't you say? I need to get a handle on it. |

Huh, okay, I get it now. But is that even somethin' you can improve by studying? |

Beats me... I've tried everything and I've yet to see much in the way of results. Last time I was at the museum, there was this one work that was just a single piece of string on an otherwise bare canvas. |

For real? Somethin' that simple, any kid with craft supplies could do better... That's supposed to be "art"? |

My thoughts were much the same. I just couldn't understand it. So I went online and read some reviews by others who'd seen the same work. They talked about the artist's intentions, the hidden themes... All speculation, of course. But reading their takes made me realize it wasn't about right or wrong. I just had to put what I felt into words. So instead of just thinking "I don't get it," I started to try and really think about what I was looking at. |

Man... Working on your imagination sounds HARD. |

Hah hah, you're not wrong about that. I still have no idea what that work I mentioned is meant to about... But once I can come up with my own answer, I know I'll have strengthened my powers of imagination, if only a little. |

Interview over! Time for your birthday flight! Here, this is for you! What a refined and understated broom. |

Thank you. It's a lovely design. Perhaps a bit extravagant for me, though... |

You'll have plenty of time to look at it later! Get flyin' already before your birthday spread gets cold! |

Right. I'll head over ASAP. |

I should gather myself. Can't let nerves get the better of me in front of everyone... *inhale* Okay, let's do this! |
