It's Not Magic

Scalding Sands - Stone Steps

It's cool that Jamil gets to cue the fireworks and all…

But boy is it BORIN' just waitin' around!
You got that right. There's really nothing to do, huh...

Don't worry! I've got just the thing. Here!

Ah, sparklers and such. That's a great way to pass the time.

Oho. Fireworks you can hold in your hand? A most fitting choice, Asim.

I had to procure them in a hurry, but hearing you say that makes it all worthwhile, Malleus.

I wanna try one! Fork it over!

Okay, I'll light them. Now, make sure you hold on tight and don't point them at other people.

Ooo! Sparkly!

That's so neat!

We've got lots of different colors and types, and they're all really fun. Go on, try 'em!

I'm gonna light 10 at once!

Don't you dare!

Be careful you don't burn yourself or anyone else. The blisters can hurt for days.
I'm putting a bucket of water right here. Make sure you dunk the fireworks when you're done, even if it looks like they're burned out.

You're rather well-informed on firework safety, Clover.

I used to play with them all the time back home, with my brother and sister.

I see...
No wonder you're so good at minding others. There's something to be said for people with siblings.

Oh, I'm not doing anything special.
Now then... It's been a while since I've played with one of these. Might as well join in.

This one shoots out a chartreuse flame. It looks like a broom... How quaint.
What's this? It's changing color now.
I've never seen a magical artifact that solely alters the color of flame.

Hahaha, it's not magic. It's science.
They add certain metals to the fireworks mixture that burn in different colors.
Barium makes yellow-green, lithium gets you red, and sodium produces yellow.
Not many humans can use magic, so we turn to chemistry for stuff like this.

Interesting. I knew you had advanced technologies, but it never occurred to me you'd use them for amusement.

Wow, you're so smart, Trey!

Guess you're not in the Science Club for nothin'. Oh, and here are some spent 'works for the bucket.

Yeah, we've done a lot of experiments. The Science Club does more than cook and grow vegetables, you know.
We also do research to prep for competitions. There's a lot more work than you'd think.

Neat! We just eat snacks and chat in the Pop Music Club.

I'm pretty sure you would've gone over flame tests in class...
Anyway, the fireworks in the show will change colors based on the same principle as well.
But it's all on a much bigger scale than these sparklers. And a lot more work goes into making them.
I hear it can take close to two months to make a single shot.

All that effort for something that's gone in the blink of an eye...
I don't understand humans. Wouldn't it be much faster to find a mage?

Haha, maybe.
But I personally think it's amazing.
So much time and engineering goes into these things that exist solely for the enjoyment of others.
I'd argue the fireworks look even more beautiful because of all that craftsmanship.

…A fascinating perspective.
I'll keep that in mind when we watch the fireworks later.

I'd be happy to tell you more about fire colors until the show—oh…

Wahahahaha! This one's all black and slithery!

Yeah, it's called a snake!

Whoa, rad. I doubt it'd get much traction on Magicam, though, since it looks kinda basic...

They're not listening, are they?

When you light a lot of 'em at once, it looks like a bunch of snakes battling it out.

Yeah, to see which one's the slitheriest!

Trey, Malleus, you gotta see this!

Yeah, sure. Be right over.
