Trivia[]
- The Applepom outfits share a resemblance to the winter outfits in Disney's 2013 "Frozen" film, as they both draw inspiration from Scandinavian culture.[1]
- "Moln" is Swedish for "cloud."
- Mount Moln is based on the tallest mountain of the Scandinavian Mountain Range, Galdhøpiggen. Just like its real-life counterpart, Mount Moln is also 2,469-metres tall.[2][3]
- The detail Epel mentions in Chapter 1-2 about the competition lasting all night might be a nod to "Iron Will," a 1994 Disney film that told the story of a country boy who enters a dog sledding race.[4]
- As shown in Chapter 2-1, Sebek is weak to the cold. This is because he is based on a crocodile.[5]
- In Chapter 3-5, Epel tells the group that the word "Kokko" is Ancient Shaftlands language, but it is actually Finnish for "bonfire."
- In Chapter 3-5, the large apple pies are a reference to the Aomori Prefecture in Japan, where pies as big as 3 metres are baked for the Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festivals in April.[6]
- The pancake balls in Chapter 4-3 is a traditional Danish snack popularly sold in Nordic countries by street vendors during the Christmas season. Its name in Danish, "æbleskiver," literally means "apple slices."[7]
- The red and brown wrinkly mushroom in the soup that Jade and the group drinks in Chapter 4-3 is known as the Gyromitra esculenta. It is a popular delicacy in Scandinavia. When cooking, the fungi will release toxins that the cook has to be careful of, which is what Epel means when he calls it a finicky ingredient that only experts cook with.[8]
- The smörgåstårta, or sandwich cake, in Chapter 4-5 is a standard dish for family gatherings in Finland.[9]
- The fruktsoppa, or fruit soup, in Chapter 4-6 is a staple food in Scandinavian countries and is a traditional soup served during the Christmas season.[10]
