How I Wish There Was a Cure (Part One)

Alchemy Workshop

Year 2, Class A: Asim and Silver!
I trust you know why you're the only two I called in after school?

Because I nodded off during a test...

Because I broke five beakers in potionology today?

Precisely, my two little repeat offenders. You're a naughty pair of bad boys.
And bad boys need to be punished.

Will you be assigning us extra work, sir?

Why, yes–your assignment is to formulate a sleeping potion! If you like sleeping so much, this should be right up your alley.
What's more, I will be withholding your potionology credit until you succeed.
What?!

If you don't like it, then reflect on your actions and channel your energy into the assignment. Dismissed!

Losing credit would make me an embarrassment to Malleus!
I must formulate a proper sleeping potion.
Kalim, I'm going to stay and work on this. What about you?

I'll join you. A housewarden losing class credit would make his dorm look pretty bad.

All right, then let's get to work. What page of the textbook has the formula...?

Hold on, Silver! Why bother reading a textbook when we can get a rundown from Jamil way faster?
If you keep squinting at text, you're just going to nod off again.
Don't worry. You're not alone. Hard-to-read text puts me right to sleep, too.

I'm not nodding off because the class is too hard to understand.

It's okay! You can be honest with me. Besides, Jamil's good at potion-brewing and he's a great teacher!
If we get his help, we'll have a sleeping potion whipped up in no time! Sit tight. I'll be right back!

Ah, wait!...He ran off before I could stop him.
Do people think I get sleepy when I try to study...?

So you want me to assist you with a remedial assignment. I see.

I'm sorry about this. I tried to stop him from roping you in.

Is it too big of an ask?

Hardly, especially considering you already dragged me all the way to the potionology lab.
You have my aid. As vice housewarden, I certainly wouldn't want our housewarden losing class credit.
You've got your lab equipment in order. All right, go ahead and get started on the potion.
I'll speak up if you make a misstep.
Right!

We start by measuring five grams of duskweed... There. That should be perfect.

Now we dump it in with some bay laurel berries and blend 'em together!

Slow down, Kalim. You're being way too fast and loose with this. Follow the textbook instructions to the letter.
Compounding requires care and precision. That's Potionology 101.

But Professor Crewel whipped it up just like that.

Yes, because he's a PROFESSOR at Night Raven College teaching potionology, not a boy in danger of losing his class credit.
We haven't yet mastered the basics, so it's important for us to take our time and proceed with caution.
That goes for you too, Silver. Is that clear?

...Zzz.

You're sleeping?! Of all the times...

I think you talked too long there, Jamil. Aha ha!

...Ah! Did I nod off again?

Yes. In the middle of my lecture.

Sorry. I've always been prone to drowsy spells. I just can't fight them when they hit...

Yeah, I know. Studying does that to a guy.

No, it's not just when I'm studying or listening to something complicated.
I don't know what causes it. That's the trouble.
Even the doctors are stumped, so it can't be an illness... *gasp* It must be my laziness that makes me drowsy!

So you subconsciously want to slack off?

That has to be it, right? Oh, how I wish there was a cure.

Hey, I've got an idea! Let's make a wake-up potion!

Must you keep adding distractions? What about your assignment?

If we want him to focus during the assignment, our best bet is to make him nice and alert.
After all, when I attend ceremonies or housewarden meetings...
You always make wake-up potions for me!

You'd do that? I don't know if it would help my condition or not, but I'm willing to try it.

Great! Then there's no time like the present. We should be able to get most of the components we need from the garden.

I owe you for this, Kalim. Okay, let's get gathering!

Yeah!

Hey! Not all of the components are in the garden!
In fact, none of this is actually your assignment...
You're supposed to be making a SLEEPING potion, not a glorified cup of coffee!

How I Wish There Was a Cure (Part Two)

Botanical Garden - Temperate Zone

Out of the wake-up potion components, we've got thundertree leaves and ground cherry seeds...

That just leaves the last component, dawnweed. That one's proving tricky to find.

As I already told you, the garden doesn't have every component.
Dawnweed is a rare medicinal herb. You'd have to go to the forest a ways out from here to find any.

How long would it take to reach the forest?

For a round trip? About three hours.

Oh, dear... The sun's starting to set already. Looking for rare herbs under the veil of night sounds borderline impossible.

Isn't there something else we can do, Jamil? Like a workaround using other herbs?

I keep telling you, potionology isn't the fast and loose science you think it is.

I guess we'll have to throw in the towel on the wake-up potion, then.
I want to follow in Father's footsteps and become a great knight, which is another reason I'd hoped to fix my sleep issue. *sigh*

Aw, Silver...
Blue Bird
*chirp*

Hm...?

Ooh, look. A bird's perching on your shoulder. Is it trying to make you feel better?

Oh... Maybe it is.

Are you two serious?
This isn't a fairy tale, you know. The birds in the garden are just used to being around people.

Now a bunny's hopping up to Silver's feet! Awww, so cute!

*gasp* Hey, Silver. That plant the rabbit's nibbling on...
That's the dawnweed you were looking for!

Really?!

Little one, would you let me have these leaves?
Rabbit
*nod nod nod!*

Thank you. That's very nice of you.

Look at that, Jamil! The bunny's jumping for joy!

Is it just me, or is that rabbit actually blushing? Is it some sort of illusion?

What's that sound?

Whoa! A whole herd of animals is approaching!

It's okay, Kalim. Jamil. They won't hurt us.
Red Bird
*tweet tweet!*

You're carrying dawnweed too. Could I have it? Thank you.
Squirrel
*nuzzle nuzzle*

Ha ha, don't nuzzle my cheek. That tickles.
...Ah. You just want to give me the dawnweed you brought, right?

These animals have brought you a whole pile of dawnweed in no time flat...

That's incredible, Silver! Not even my family's beast tamer could tame critters this wild!
What are you, some kind of animal whisperer? Aha ha ha!

Sorry if that startled you guys.

Are you skilled at animal linguistics or mind manipulation magic?

It's nothing of the sort.
Ever since I was a kid, any time I got lost or just felt discouraged when training went poorly, animals would come up and help me.
I'm not sure what it is. I've heard of animal magnetism, but maybe I have it in a literal sense?

Neat! I've got a relative who tigers really take to, so anything's possible.
After all, I've seen other guys like you around!

Is it really such a common characteristic...?
Between your propensity for sleep and your popularity with animals... You're an odd one indeed, Silver.

I couldn't agree more. If only I could figure out what that means.
Alchemy Workshop

Jamil? When the liquid in the beaker turns emerald green, that means the wake-up potion is done, right?

Yes, and it will be ruined if the temperature drops even a single degree. Proceed very carefully. That goes double for you, Kalim.

I got this! Measure out the components, mix 'em in carefully, and...

Last, put in the dawnweed.
SFX
*poof!*

Yikes, it blew up! Is it ruined? Did I break another beaker?!

No, I think you're fine. Take a closer look.

Oh, the liquid's emerald green now!

The wake-up potion's finished. I'll no longer be a slave to my drowsiness.
Thank you both, Jamil and Kalim.

Ha ha! I'm just happy for you, Silver!

It's a good thing you're done, because tonight you're going to be staying up and learning how to make the sleeping potion for your assignment.

Oh, whoops! I totally forgot about the sleeping potion!

Oops. I guess we're just getting started.

How did I know these two airheads would completely forget what they were supposed to do?
