A cool and collected boy who guards Malleus like a knight. He is so low-key that his calm demeanor often crosses over into a state of visible drowsiness.

Appearance
Silver is a fair-skinned young man of average height. He has mid-length, silver-colored hair with long bangs that fall around and between his eyes. He also has a small cowlick on the top of his head. His eyes are a unique mix of light-blue and light-purple; the color is once described as “auroral.”[2] He is usually shown with a neutral and, occasionally, half-lidded expression. Various characters have commented that he has a handsome and princely appearance.
Dorm Uniform
Silver’s uniform is similar to the rest of the Diasomnia students. Silver also wears dark green eyeliner while in his dorm uniform. The uniform consists of a black all-weather coat with neon green and silver accents, black combat suspenders and belts, jodhpur pants, a small garrison cap, black gloves, and heeled knee-high boots.
The all-weather coat has asymmetrically colored lapels, with one black and one neon green. Both lapels have silver straps and buttons on them. Two silver zippers go down the center of the coat, lined with neon green stripes. The coat reaches below the waist in length, and the sleeves are folded up to reveal a neon green underlining with silver trim. Silver wears a white collared shirt and black tie underneath his coat.
Over the coat and above the waist is a set of black belts with silver buckles. The lowest belt hangs at an angle, and connects to several silver spools of thread on his right hip. Between the belt and spools is a silver ornament, shaped like a spinning wheel. On the other side of the belt is a holster for a magic pen. The black combat suspenders worn above the belts have silver buttons and a unique cuff around the right arm that resembles a dragon’s wing.
The jodhpur pants are black with neon green stripes going down the outer seams, and the knee-high boots are black with neon green soles. The garrison cap is black with neon green trim, and the sides fold up to resemble curved horns.
Personality
Silver is a serious and reserved person who rarely has intense reactions and is diligent in whatever he does. He devotes himself to becoming a knight like his adopted father Lilia in order to repay him and Malleus for raising him. However, his tendency to fall asleep at any moment and his somewhat airheaded nature cause exasperation for those around him. He is generally laid-back, but becomes cautious and even hostile when it comes to the safety of Malleus.
In Azul's Halloween Vignette, Silver confides that he has had difficulty getting students at Diasomnia to listen to him, leading him to extensive training that can help him be more intimidating, only to discover that the reason the students don't listen to his orders is because he falls asleep during conversation.[3]
Background
Silver is the son of the Dawn Knight, a mortal enemy of the fae who killed their princess, Maleanor. When he was an infant, their kingdom was under attack and his parents unfortunately lost their lives, leaving him orphaned. To ensure infant Silver would survive, three guardian fairies blessed him with a gift that put him in a slumber for hundreds of years. He remained asleep in the abandoned castle until Lilia found him hundreds of years later, having woken up as a result of the fairies' blessings weakening over time. It was then that Silver received Lilia's blessing, causing his hair to turn from gold to silver as a result of receiving a nocturnal fae's blessing.[4]
Silver was then adopted by Lilia to be raised like his own son. Silver used to think Lilia was his real father until he noticed their ears look different. It was then Silver learnt about the existence of different races and that he and Lilia aren't related by blood. Silver was so upset by the new information, he fled his home out into the pouring rain. Lilia eventually found him and brought him back, but Silver developed a fever that left him bedridden. Lilia remained by his side until he got better. Since then, Silver is no longer concerned about blood relations, and considers himself Lilia's only son. [5][6]
Silver grew up eating Lilia's homecooked meals. After he enrolled at Night Raven College, he was surprised how good the cafeteria's cooking is.
Signature Spell

Silver
Silver's signature spell "Meet in a Dream" allows him to travel through people's dreams via passages he calls dreamways, although it doesn't let him specify whose. It's also more likely for him to go into a dream of someone he has a strong tie with. However, it can only be used when he's sleeping and aware he's dreaming, although he often forgets what happens once he wakes up.[7] When he's among others in a dream, he can transport them with him so long as they're holding onto him.[8]
Trivia
- Silver is the only named student to not have a last name.
- He receives the last name "Vanrouge" from Lilia for his 18th birthday present, officiated by Malleus.
- He, Azul, and Cater are the same height, standing at 176cm (5'9").
- According to Ruggie, Silver is considered incredibly oblivious by his peers. He and Kalim are collectively referred to as the "Facepalm Brigade." [9]
- He attracts small animals such as birds and squirrels, who sometimes help him when he is in need, such as when he needed a specific plant for alchemy class. According to Silver, they would flock to him whenever he got lost in the forest or when he felt down about not doing well in training since he was young.[10]
- He calls Lilia "Father" (親父殿 Oyaji-dono in Japanese). However, he tries to refrain from doing so in front of other students that don't know about their background.
- Silver reveals this information to the other students in Book 7 Part 13.
- Silver is one of three students (along with Kalim and Rook) to use light magic for his non-element magic.
- He does not know the reason for his sleepiness, but would like to have it cured.[10]
- He thinks MC has a talent for the sword.[11]
- His childhood friend seems to be Sebek.
- According to Lilia, he and Sebek used to be scaredy cats. Due to this, Lilia had quite a bit of laundry to do after Halloween.[12]
- According to Silver, Lilia named him. He also mentions that the origin of Lilia's name for him is from the color of his hair. [5][4]
- His hair is cut by either himself or Lilia.[13]
- Silver is the twisted form of the Disney Princess Aurora from the film Sleeping Beauty, sharing many traits and parallels to the princess.
- Silver’s signature spell "Meet in a Dream” alludes to the film’s theme "Once Upon a Dream”, the main love theme for Prince Philip and Princess Aurora.
- Silver is physically 17, but chronologically over 400 years old. This is due to being placed in a sleeping spell as a baby which kept him in stasis until he woke up and started to age again. [4]
- It is theorized that this spell has turned into a curse for Silver, as he has no control over his drowsiness and falls asleep uncontrollably.
- Silver is the only character with his birthday shown in the main story.[1]
