Happy Birthday! (Part One)

Savanaclaw Dorm - Lounge

Oh boy, it's finally my birthday! Just gotta get this interview over with and I can get down to stuffin' my face.
Wonder who's gonna be my interviewer. Hopefully someone in the mood to celebrate me.
???
Naturally I would like nothing more, Monsieur Dent-de-Lion. Happy birthday.

I promise to do all that I can to make this day a fine one, Ruggie.

Whoa!
S-so you're the interviewer, Rook? I mean—forget about what I said. You don't gotta go out of your way or anythin'—

I won't hear another word of protest. I have a job to do, and I intend to do it well.

...Guess there's no use arguin'.Okay, let's get down to it then!

Mais oui! We begin...with THIS!
Do you consider flight magic one of your strong suits or weak points?

Flyin', huh? With my measly magic capacity I can't go very far...but I do like it.
If it's my grade in flight class you're askin' about, could be better, could be worse.

Hmm. You have exceptional balance, and your physical capabilities even allow you to fly upside down.
Yet despite that, your grades in flight are merely average? Is there something lacking in your fundamentals?

Bullseye. There's a big gap between the stuff I'm good at and the stuff I'm not so good at.
I'm at my best when I'm tryin' to avoid something. When we play broom tag in class I never get caught.
Growin' up I was always gettin' chased by real scary adults through super narrow alleys. That's probably why.
But stuff like flyin' in a straight line or maintain' a specific speed is a real challenge.
You can't ask me to fly all polite like the sheltered babies that go to school here.

Come to think of it, some call you the "Discswiper," do they not?
I believe the spelldrive tournament announcer coined that nickname.

Kinda creeps me out you know all that...

Epel often regales me with stories of you.

Huh, okay. Still kinda feels weird knowin' you all talk about me in Pomefiore.
Don't put much stock in compliments, but I guess I don't hate it.

Here you are, Ruggie, playing spelldrive for a powerhouse school like Night Raven College.
No doubt owing to your unpredictable flying style and keen eyes.

Hey, you here to interview me for my birthday or analyze my stats as an athlete?

It's not like that, Ruggie. I merely wished to unravel the mystery of your strength.
My curiosity has gotten the better of me, I'm afraid. Perhaps a game of tag is in order so I might see your abilities firsthand.

Uh, well, there's still more questions, right? Ask me the next one!

Happy Birthday! (Part Two)

Very well, on to the next question.
What is your best subject in school?

Animal linguistics. I'm pretty good if I say so myself. Can even converse with mice.

Impressive. The mouse language is a difficult one to grasp indeed. Have you undergone any special instruction, by chance?

Nope, nothin' like that.
Round my house there were all sorts of cats and dogs, and mice of course. So I just kinda picked it up via osmosis.
The boss at my part time job had a dog I used to walk, and I used to take care of people's cats too. That probably helped.

So you were spurred on by interactions with the animals around you in your daily life.
Still, it's not as though just anyone can pick up animal languages simply by being around them.
Even taking into account your keen beastfolk hearing, your abilities seem a cut above.

Shyeheehee, thanks. Animal linguistics is definitely somethin' I wanna get real good at.
It's a practical skill, so should be handy for findin' a job. It came in real useful at my old part time gig, after all.

I imagine it would be a useful skill for many part time jobs. Could you give me some examples?

Sure. For one, pet sittin' animals when their owners are away. That's pretty obvious.
One time I was pet sittin' for a cat that had lost its appetite.
So while I was takin' care of it, I asked it what was wrong. And it told me it was tired of always eatin' the same food.

Ah, yes. A common issue for pet cats.

Yeah, but the owner had no idea.
Once they got back, I suggested they mix up the cat's food. The next day, they called me back to their house!
I thought maybe they needed pet sittin' again, but actually they wanted to thank me for bringin' back the cat's appetite!
And it's not like I even really did anythin'. Pretty sweet gig.

To you it was a simple thing, but it made them happy. Didn't that fell nice?

Yeah—and it felt EXTRA nice when they became a repeat client and recommended me to all their friends to boot.
After that I got real busy for a while. It's like they say; if you've got a skill, you'll always have a livin'.

Happy Birthday! (Part Three)

Time flies when you're having fun, doesn't it? We've reached the final question.
How do you spend your days off?

You know, I don't really have any.

You don't?

Most days I've got spelldrive practice, and if there's no match it's 'cuz we've got a match.
Any other days, I try to pick up as many odd jobs as I can!
With how busy I am at school I can't work a lot of hours, so I pretty much just do one-off gigs in town.

That is quite the packed schedule! But I imagine there must be times when there aren't any jobs that fit your requirements.

When that happens I do chores for my dormmates and classmates, or folks in my club.
Doesn't pay well, but sometimes I get a little food to eat, or if I'm cleanin', I can take stuff they don't want anymore.
Honestly I can usually sell that stuff for a decent chunk. One person's trash is another's treasure, and all that!

Trés bien! Not only are you getting real world experience, but you're helping to save the environment as well!

Not really why I'm doin' it, but sure.
Come to think of it, the other day I really did have a day off. Didn't work a job or anything, just went into town with some guys from my club.
After our mornin' practice we got on our brooms and off we went. A little early birthday celebration for yours truly.

Friendships fostered through your club. There is no truer beauté!

I mean, I wouldn't say we're close, exactly.
But it was nice to get presents from folks returnin' the favor for a gift I'd given 'em before, or as thanks for cleanin' their room.

Sounds lovely. What did you get?

Lunch, for one thing. Got the most expensive burger they had at the joint.
Then we kicked around town and checked out all the sales.
When we were feelin' thirsty we went to a café.
Was the kinda place I'd usually never go near on my own. Every drink there was like 10 thaumarks at least.
But I wasn't the one buyin'! I got a sweet café au lait with a mountain of whipped cream on top. Hit the spot.
It was one of those blended drinks, actually. Cofee, milk, and syrup, all mixed up with ice.
Perfect for a hot day! Not to mention you can actually drink the WHOLE thing.
With a normal drink you get stuck with a bunch of ice at the end, which is a bummer.
I'd never buy somethin' like that for myself. Hopefully I can get someone to treat me to it again one day.

What a lovely present.

There was more, too. Candied fruits, some kinda stuffed breads...
I got spoiled with all sorts of stuff. Even got some sweets for the road!
Had a great day off all without spendin' a single sorcent. And I'm gonna get to stuff my face later today on top of that.
Enrolling here at Night Raven College has really opened my eyes to how awesome birthdays are.

How I hate for our fun to stop, but sadly the finale is upon us. Please accept this broom.

Hey, thanks. I don't know much about flowers if they aren't edible, but the ones on this look pretty tasty. Like some kinda baked sweet.
They look real fancy, too. Wonder how much I could get for this if I hawked it... Nah, only pullin' your leg.

Glad to hear you weren't serious. Such a heartfelt bouquet should be treasured in memory of this occasion.
Now, Monsieur Dent-de-Lion! Take this broom, and take flight!

Sure thing. I'm gonna give you all a show.
Just a little longer 'til that party... Time to work up an appetite!
