If That's the Rule... (Part One)

Hm...?
I've never woken up to the sound of waves before. Are the others up yet...?
Everyone Else
*snore* *mumble*

I suppose not. But I won't be able to get back to sleep now. Maybe I'll get some fresh air.
Deserted Island - Shore

The sea stretches so far. It still hasn't quite sunk in for me yet... We really are stranded here, aren't we?
Are Trey, Cater, and the rest of the boys worried about me? I hope Mother's all right...

......

You're staring at the ocean with quite the absent gaze. Is something troubling you?

Lilia? No, it's nothing like that...
Back in Heartslabyul, I had a morning routine. I would patrol the dorm before the others woke and iron my shirt for the day.
But neither task is necessary here, so I don't know what to do with myself.

It's good to be diligent. But in my opinion, you could stand to have more fun and enjoy our time here for what it is.

Easier said than done. I still have reservations about spending my time unproductively.

Hmm, I see. That's hardly surprising, coming from you... Oooh, wait!
I have an idea. Once we've had breakfast, let's do our patrols and food runs and then meet up on this beach!

For what purpose?

I won't spoil the surprise. Khee hee hee!

And so!
Without further ado, let the First Midsummer Beach Flags Tournament begin!

Beach Flags... This game supposedly began as a form of practice for surf lifesavers, if I recall.
Competitors lie on their stomachs at the starting line and face away from the flags, then race for the flags at the sound of a signal.
There's one fewer flag than there are competitors, and the one who can't get a flag is eliminated. They race until one winner is left.

You know quite a bit. Have you played before?

I know about it because it came up in a crossword puzzle in the back of some reading material, I haven't tried it myself...

Well, it's no mere game. We're stranded on an island far out at sea. Who knows when danger could strike?
This is a sport that helps you strengthen your mind and body.
But a race with no stakes is hardly any fun, so I've arranged a fabulous prize for the winner...
A fabulous Floyd-made fruit parfait!
A parfait?!

I was ready to sit this one out...but that parfait sounds too good to miss!

Considering what rare form Floyd's been in since coming here, this could lead to a new Mostro Lounge offering.

I'm not big on parfaits, but I always bring my A-game to competitions.

Ahaha. You guys think you'll win? I got this one in the bag!

If there's a parfait—*cough*—if there's special training involved, then I won't give this anything less than my best.

I want that parfait, and I want it now! Let's do this thing already, Lilia!

Eager to start, aren't we? All right, then. Ready, set...

If That's the Rule... (Part Two)

Deserted Island - Shore
Everyone
HRAAAGH!

Whoa! Everyone just dove head-first into the sand! It's all over you. Are you all right, Ace?

Just fine! It's soft stuff. Not to mention this part is like, half the fun of Beach Flags.

Getting covered in sand is supposed to be FUN?

It's all in service of a lifesaver's duty. One must be ready to dive right in and go for the target without a moment's hesitation.
Plunging into the sand with gusto is, in effect, mandatory. It's vital to the game!

It's mandatory?! Ah... All right. If that's the rule, then I'll have to obey it.

I don't remember hearing about any such rule.

It's more entertaining-ah, I mean engaging-that way. Now, let's start the next race!

I got a flag! Ah... I still need to dive. Hwah!

Goldfishie's belly-floppin' after gettin' the flag! That's hilarious. Not to mention pointless.

I don't know how to slide, okay?

Just kick off into the sand like you would into the water. Like...SPLOOSH.

What are you talking about? When entering water, you should acclimate yourself gradually, one foot at a time!

Hmm. He's got some rather stubborn ideas. All right, next race!

This time I'll do it... HRAH!

My word... Riddle, did you just slide feet-first and snatch the flag with your toes?

I deemed a forward dive to be too difficult. There's nothing in the rules barring using one's feet to claim the flag, right?

No, not really...but that seems WAY harder!

Now it's getting good! Next race!

This competition was already hot enough to evaporate the ocean, and now it's reaching the final stage! Only two contenders remain...
Jack, the rising superstar of the Track Club, whose flawless running form and dives have consistently gotten him flags!
And Riddle, the red sovereign of Heartslabyul, who somehow survived every elimination despite his inability to dive into the sand!

Now, let's hear from those who were sadly eliminated in previous rounds.

I really don't see how anyone can beat Jack. Not even my housewarden...

Their differences in physique are quite telling. With magic not allowed, Riddle's chances are looking slim indeed.

Go for it, you two! I don't care who wins as long as you gimme a bite of that parfait!
Make this a good race, guys!Share some of that parfait, please!

Khee hee hee... No one can say what might happen. Summery beaches are a prime spot for monsters to lurk, after all.

Hmm? I see some shells on the ground near Sea Urchin. Are those what I think they are...?

It's time for the race! Heads down... GO!
HRAAAGH!

Whoa! What's that?! A bunch of seashells just skittered out in front of me... Were there hermit crabs hiding in the sand?!

HAAAH!
YES! A face-first plunge!

Look at the dust cloud he kicked up! Has he ever heard of exercising restraint?

*sputter* *cough, cough* Got...sand in my mouth...but I finally dove right in, without any reservations whatsoever!
And I got the flag! I did it! I won! Did you see that, Ace?!

Sure did, Housewarden. Way to go!
Geez, look at him jumping for joy all covered in sand. The other Heartslabyul guys wouldn't believe their eyes if they saw him now.

That was clearly faulty course maintenance! This calls for a rematch... Then again, it'd be tacky to get all bent out of shape over a game.
I guess summery beaches are a prime spot for hermit crabs, after all.

Welp, congrats on winnin', Goldfishie. Here's your fabulous Floyd-made fruit parfait!

I've also got special sundaes as consolation prizes for the rest of our participants. No one gets left out of snack time on my watch!
Woohoo! Yesss!

I've never been so sandy before. But... Heh heh heh... It's not the worst thing in the world.

Hey! Stitch, no! That's MY parfait. If you try to take it from me, I'll have your head!
