Happy Birthday! (Part One)

Ignihyde Dorm - Lounge

Getting interviewed on my birthday while also being a Night Raven College student is a dream come true!
And thanks to Idia I was able to equip a gear facsimile of everyone else's birthday outfits. I'm so happy!
Ooh, I should capture this on video so I can show Idia later. And Mom and Dad as well.
???
Video? ...That bears further discussion. Coming in now.

Many happy returns, Ortho. I have been chosen to conduct your interview today.

Sebek Zigvolt! Thank you—I'm so excited!

Indeed. A second ago you mentioned something about capturing video. Does that mean I'm going to be recorded as well?

Yup. Guess if you screw up it won't look good to Malleus, so you'd better be careful, huh?

Hmph. What manner of blunder do you imagine I'd make? I could interview you in my sleep. Let's get on with it.
Do you consider flight magic one of your strong suits or weak points?

Hm... That's a tricky question for a humanoid.
I can't hop on a broom and use flight magic like mages such as yourself, Sebek.

Oh? Then what is it that fuels that incessant levitating of yours?

Technomantic energy. In layman's terms, a hybrid of magic and electrical power.
With different gears and attachments I can even increase my flight time and speed.
As long as I have enough technomantic energy, I can fly anywhere I want.
Navigating tricky courses and maintaining a specific speed are a cinch as well.
When I initially became a student here, I just audited the flight and PE classes.
After all, it's not like I can build endurance or strength through training the same way as you and the others.

If you merely audit those classes, then why did I see you out flying with other students just the other week?

Ah, you saw that? Well, Coach Vargas recently brought me on as an assistant.

So you're helping him coach?

More or less. During flight class, I fly alongside my classmates and collect data on their form and times.
I use that data to determine their habits and weaknesses, and suggest ways they might improve.

Hm. I can certainly see the advantage of getting an objective perspective on one's flying.

Right? Coach Vargas says I'm really helping his students get pumped!

On to the next question...
Describe a time when you were glad you were able to use magic.

Another difficult one for me.
I may have gotten a heart that gives me visualization capabilities, but that doesn't mean I can actually use magic...
My abilities are powered by technomantic energy in principle, after all.
But I AM a student at an arcane academy... So thanks to magic, I've made friends!

The best part of being a student at the prestigious Night Raven College in your opinion...is that you've made friends?

Yeah. I came here as my brother's gadget, but that allowed me to meet so many real humans.
And once I could start taking classes like a regular student, I got the chance to interact with even more people.
I had a great time in group lessons the other day researching the legends about the Great Seven.
Your class would have done the same activity, right, Sebek?

We did. Writing a single report between four people is such an inefficient waste of time.

Huh, you really think group lessons are a waste? That's interesting.

From the sound of things, it seems you're rather fond of that kind of assignment yourself.

I am! It was fascinating. Hearing everyone's thoughts made me realize that the same story can read so differently depending on the person.

Read differently?

Because of their values.
And I realized that those values always have a strong connection to past experience. Memories, in other words.
Take people born in Briar Valley, for example. They grew up hearing tales of the Thorn Fairy.
Which naturally makes them emotionally attached to those stories, so discussions pertaining to them can get quite heated.
And they're liable to trust those idealized memories over accurate data.

IDEALIZED? The Thorn Fairy WAS ideal. One cannot extol her virtues enough!

Well, it sounds like we could have a lively discussion on that subject sometime.
Though in class the other day, I was able to use my database of sources to debunk every contradiction I found...
I wonder how you'd fare in a debate against me.

Better than those piddling classmates of yours, I'd imagine. I'm exceedingly well-read on all matters concerning the Thorn Fairy.

Ooh, so you can back up your claims? This should be interesting.
Once we're done here, let's set up a time to talk. Heh heh, it'll be so much fun.

Happy Birthday! (Part Three)

Ignihyde Dorm - Lounge

Final question.
How do you spend your days off?

I get up to a lot, but I guess mostly I watch movies and livestreams of plays.
And lately I've been going out to lunch or tea with classmates and students from my dorm.

Lunch? Tea? I thought you didn't eat.

I don't. I just go to talk to everyone, and listen to them blow off steam about school or their friends.

Hmph. I can't imagine anything more boring. Don't you have better things to do with your time?

It isn't boring at all! I learn so much from observing the way people get worked up about all the little things.

And how is that helpful?

Well, I can draw on the stories they tell me when I really want to disappear into a role.

Role? Ah, that's right. You're in the Film Research Club. So you use your interactions with humans as fodder for your acting.

Mhm. But the club didn't meet this last day off, so my brother and I went into town.

With...Idia? Idia went OUTSIDE?!

Yeah!
We both play this game that uses our smartphone GPS, so we go out together sometimes.
We'll put in an online order at a restaurant that's an item pick-up spot in the game...
...then go sit on a bench in Whistler Commons to eat and plan what to do next.
Once Idia finishes eating, we'll walk around the park looking for items and getting into battles.
Sort of like a picnic. Fun, right?

I haven't the faintest idea what this game you mentioned is... But it doesn't sound like a bad way to pass the time.
Back home my parents or older siblings would often take me to the local park to play.

Heh heh, so you and your family are close! Just like us!
We used to go on family outings to parks or the woods or the riverside...
...until Idia started shutting himself up in his room, that is. We don't really do that anymore.

But Idia HAS started coming out of his room. Perhaps a chance to go somewhere as a family will present itself.
Some sort of camping trip outside would do him good. He's indoors far too often.

That's a great idea. Thanks for the advice!

Of course. What sort of interviewer would I be if I didn't offer you badly needed wisdom?
Don't hesitate to ask if ever you require more tips on enjoying the outdoors with your family.

That concludes the interview. Here is your broom. I must say, its blue flowers suit you well.

Wow, my very first broom! I never thought I'd be lucky enough to get one of my own.
Look at all of these flowers. I'll have to be careful my jets don't blow them right off.

Take this broom in hand and fly, and let there be no doubt about your status as a student at the great Night Raven College.
Don't disgrace yourself during your birthday flight, Ortho.

I won't. Just you watch, Sebek Zigvolt!
Time for this special gear to make its debut. I bet everyone's going to be so surprised!
