Ramshackle[]

MC[]

Malleus first meets MC during his nightly walks near Ramshackle Dorm and he chooses not to reveal his name or identity to them for their own good. Instead, he lets MC call him by any name and is amused by the nickname MC picks for him, Hornton (Japanese: ツノ太郎, Hepburn: Tsunotarō), allowing them to call him by it.

His relationship with MC is a new experience for Malleus as MC has no knowledge about his true identity or background; Malleus is used to being well-known by everyone as one of the top mages in all of Twisted Wonderland and the heir apparent of Briar Valley, but MC is an exception in this and Malleus seems to enjoy that he can talk with someone normally, as evidenced, for example, when he seems to enjoy listening to MC, even asking them to tell him stories. The feeling is mutual and, when MC happens upon him, they consult with him about their troubles, to which Malleus responds with indirect advice (though he claimed later he didn't intend for that to be framed as such but was glad if it helped them).[1]

Overall, he is fond of MC as they are the first and only human to ever treat him as a friend or without any fear or caution, even after learning his identity in Book 5.

Heartslabyul[]

Riddle Rosehearts[]

During the events of The Phantom Bride: Love at First Fright, Malleus provides Riddle motivation when the latter is frustrated at his dormmates for being captured by Eliza and leaving him to handle the dorm's maintenance alone for the night. When he hears that Riddle has no medals nor status symbols to decorate himself with, Malleus places a rose in Riddle's chest pocket as an emblem of strength and nobility.

Ace Trappola[]

Much like the other students in Night Raven College, Ace is cautious of Malleus for his power and reputation. Because it is rare for Malleus to have someone give him an honest opinion and not be afraid to oppose him when necessary, he tends to see Ace in a positive light. The Spectral Soiree incident is a perfect example of this, when Ace shows great annoyance at the disregard of his schoolmates and friends despite the situation Malleus had put them in. In fact, Ace is the only character who criticizes him harshly to his face.

In Malleus' third birthday vignette, Malleus claims that he is glad he came to the NRC only to end up meeting interesting humans like Ace, taking him by surprise. In fact, according to Malleus, hearing such an honest and confident opinion from a first-year boy is surprising since even his classmates hesitate to talk to him. [2]

Deuce Spade[]

Malleus turned to Deuce for help with his tamagotchi when it stopped working. He appreciates Deuce's help and is even impressed by his technological skills. Once the electronic toy is working again, to show his gratitude, Malleus gave Deuce rare ores that can only be found in Briar Valley.[3]

After Ace, Malleus considers that he had some good experiences with Deuce and is grateful that he came to the NRC only to end up meeting such interesting humans.

Cater Diamond[]

Cater asked Malleus for a picture during a joint class they had, which surprised Malleus as Cater was the first person to approach him with a request like that. Malleus doesn't know a lot about Magicam, but still gave his permission to Cater to take a picture of him, but because Cater teased him before, all the photos of him turned out blurry as Malleus moved around and even started running. He then teased Cater back, using Cater's own words to get back at him.[4]

This problem of being able to take a photo of him comes back when Cater tries again to take a photo with Malleus during Firelit Sky, specifically with a melon that is suppose to make friendships last forever. While the Prefect MC has the option to agree to the photo, all the other characters (including Malleus) refuse. The boy manages to get his photo only at the end, when he encourages Malleus to consider that shot as a way to improve Lilia's mood who unfortunately was unable to come due to illness.

Cater might be the only character whom Malleus has complimented for his physical appearance twice (Firelit Sky and SSR Birthday Jacket).

Trey Clover[]

Trey and Malleus appear to have a polite relationship. During Campus Vargas, in fact, Trey is seen helping Malleus with his tent. The other students will be amazed at how Trey is not afraid of Malleus and treats him like a normal person.

Trey teaches Malleus how fireworks work in a vignette of the event Firelit Sky.

Savanaclaw[]

Leona Kingscholar[]

Malleus and Leona aren't on good terms, mostly due to Leona's dislike towards Malleus for always beating him during Spelldrive tournaments. He is one of a few to show no sign of fear for Malleus.

Silver seems convinced that the two are friends, saying that they seem to speak together frequently.

During the previous year's Beanfest, Leona and Malleus found themselves teamed up together. However, despite there being bad blood between the two, I managed to capture Rook, compensating with their power for being too out of sync for "coordinated strikes".

Despite their discordant relationship, Malleus and Leona have a lot in common:

  • they were both tutored at home, but neither believes there is anything (academically) they can learn at the NRC.
  • They both dislike Rook by refusing to go to his birthday party.
  • Students in their dorms have difficulty tracking them (and both will intentionally avoid those who look for them).
  • Both don't skimp when it comes to spending surprising amounts of money on the things they want.

During Leona's second birthday, Malleus interviews Leona and insinuates that they are both similar in that, as long as they are at the NRC, they will be able to have experiences that they could never have at home.

Scarabia[]

Kalim Al-Asim[]

From their interactions it is clear that Malleus and Kalim have a good relationship, perhaps thanks to Kalim's cheerful and easy-going personality, who shows no particular reluctance to interact with him.

Both seem to have in common that they do not realize that their decisions or presence (being two important and influential people) can put others in difficulty.

When Azul seems to insinuate that Malleus may be behind the theft of the magic stone during the Fairy Gala, Kalim is the first to defend Malleus from the insinuation.[5]

This relationship of theirs makes Kalim change his mind, when he listens to Malleus' dissent, as opposed to Jamil's, regarding his decision to go to Crowley to ask to change the color of the ceremonial robes in something more "bright and colourful".[6]

Jamil Viper[]

Because Kalim considers himself a friend of Malleus, and also because of his status as crown prince, Jamil tends to be respectful but cautious toward him. Beyond that, because of his status as a servant of the Al-Asim family, he has to be constantly careful how to address him, panicking when someone (like Kalim) does something rude or inconsiderate.

Malleus, however, has shown a friendly relationship toward him.

Pomefiore[]

Vil Schoenheit[]

Like Leona, Vil also does not seem to be intimidated by Malleus, as seen during Halloween when Vil insists that Malleus not do anything to offend the visitors, resulting in a piqued response from Malleus. Or during "Terror Is Trending", when Vil notices Malleus' furious state and immediately escorts him to a quiet place, maintaining a defensive spell to spare the others from Malleus' wrath. Once he calms down, the boy scolds him, calling him "an amateur".

Malleus seems to have a certain respect for Vil, although he can't understand how he chose Rook as his second-in-command.

Rook Hunt[]

Malleus does not seem to appreciate Rook's presence, both when he approached Lilia and when he himself was approached because of how Rook somewhat inadvertently compared him to a lizard.[7]

Overall, he appears cautious around Rook, if not disdainful.

Epel Felmier[]

Malleus and Epel briefly interact in Fleur City when they had free time, and Epel was helping a fellow Harvestonite haul apples to his stand.[8]

There, Epel seems to respect and fear Malleus initially, but when talking about Harveston, Epel's hometown, he opens up more, encouraging Malleus to visit it sometime and expressing happiness at the other's interest.

Ignihyde[]

Idia Shroud[]

Unlike every other character except Lilia, Malleus was already aware that Idia’s family fill the role of Watchman of the Isle of Woe prior to Book 6.

Like many other characters, Idia is reluctant to be close to Malleus. Despite his discomfort around Malleus, however, Idia is quick to object to Malleus’ poor attendance at the Housewarden meetings.

Ortho Shroud[]

Malleus is friendly to Ortho and curious about his nature as a robot.

Diasomnia[]

Silver[]

Silver is one of Malleus's retainers. According to Silver, Malleus and Lilia have been taking care of him forever. In the past, Malleus would sneak out of the castle only to visit him, Sebek, and Lilia. Besides Lilia, Malleus seems to have taught Silver and Sebek.

Malleus does not seem to struggle like the others to read Silver's emotions and admires Silver's perseverance, who trains hard every morning. Silver says he trains to better protect Malleus and his entourage. Malleus tends to take care of him, such as buying him strong coffee in Firelit Sky to help him with his insomnia, but also joking with him.

As his loyal vassal, Silver tends to always follow Malleus and protect him. Along with Lilia, Leona accuses Silver of being too protective of Malleus. If necessary, however, Silver does not back down when there is a need to reprimand him as seen in Glorious Masquerade, when Malleus summons lightning to clean Fleur City's waterway of lotus blossoms putting everyone's safety at risk.

In Book 7, it is with Malleus that Silver confides his feelings about Lilia's departure (and farewell), even bursting into tears and Malleus tries to comfort him.

Sebek Zigvolt[]

Sebek is one of Malleus's retainers. Although Malleus sometimes has to pull the reigns on Sebek's tendency to put Malleus on a high pedestal before others, he places a lot of trust in him and respects his efforts to protecting him.

For example, on one occasion, Sebek got Malleus's lab coat stained when they accidentally bumped into each other, and Sebek, feeling really accountable for it, asked Malleus to allow him to take his lab coat and clean it. Malleus could have cleaned his lab coat with magic without any issue, but he indulged Sebek and let him take away the coat, even though he needed it for his next class. When Sebek got back with his coat, Malleus found that it was cleaner than before and told Sebek that he is impressed.[9]

Similarly to Silver and Lilia, Sebek is very protective of Malleus to the point of insulting Leona, a member of the royal family, to his face. A behavior as rude as it is thoughtless that both Lilia and Malleus are quick to point out to him with a reprimand.

Lilia Vanrouge[]

Lilia was Malleus's caretaker when Malleus was a child, and he still tends to treat Malleus like a kid sometimes, to Malleus's slight annoyance. However, he also respects Lilia and cherishes a tamagotchi he got from Lilia as a gift many years ago, considering it one of his important treasures.[3]

He also seems to be protective of Lilia, as he threw a ball in Rook's direction when Rook was talking with Lilia and comments on how he has his sight on Lilia as a hunter.[10]

Leona accuses he and Silver of being too overprotective with Malleus.
