A Brighter Color (Part One)

Scarabia Dorm - Kalim's Room

Hm-hm-hmmm-hm-hm-hm-hmmm...
Hey, Jamil. What kinda students do you think will get picked to be in Scarabia?
I can't wait to find out at orientation!

So you've said about a hundred times today. I understand you're enthusiastic about finally having underclassmen, but try to rein it in a bit.
You have a lot to live up to this year.

I know, I know! I have to set an example not just for the freshmen, but for everyone in the dorm.

Allow me to congratulate you once again on becoming housewarden, Kalim. I'm glad the transfer of the position went without incident.

Thanks. But I thought for sure you'd be the one nominated, Jamil.

Preposterous. I'm not at all suited to it.

Really? I think you're a shoo-in. You're more capable than I am, and more detail-oriented than I'll ever be.

Which is why the role of vice housewarden is tailored for me. Ruling suits you better.

You think so? Well, I'm glad you've got my back!

Of course.

Okay, so... We gotta wear our ceremonial robes to orientation, right? Wonder where mine got to.

  • sigh* Usually, one prepares this sort of thing in advance. Do try to get it together, housewarden.
Your robes have finished being altered and are hanging in your closet. See?
You've grown since last year, so I had the back expanded and the sleeves lengthened.

You're so on top of everything, Jamil! You're the best vice housewarden a guy could ask for.

Yes, yes. The ceremony will begin shortly, so we must prepare quickly.
First, we need to do your makeup. Face me and close your eyes.

Right.

...Excellent. Your brows are "on point," or so I've heard the saying go.
Next we must dress you. Spread your arms. I'll slide the robe on, and...
Yes, the shoulder length is perfect.
Finally, we raise the hood, and...done. Is the belt too tight?

No, it's perfect. Thanks, Jamil!

Here's a mirror. Have a look and let me know if anything seems off.

Hmmm, let's see...
Uh, I'm far from an expert on this kinda stuff, but I think I look great!
I doubt I'd notice anything that slipped past your watchful eye, anyway. Aha ha!

Listen. Today is your debut as housewarden. Your personal appearance matters.

You're right. I'll try to look more closely.
Oh!

So you found something! Don't tell me— a rip? A tear? A loose hem?!

No. I was just thinking that our robes look really plain.

Come again? Er, there's nothing we can do about the design at this point.

I'd like it to have more ornate patterns. Ooh, like a magic carpet, for instance!
And wearing the hood makes it difficult to see my face. How're any of us wearing these robes supposed to tell each other apart?
How about we all wear headscarves instead? At least, all the members of Scarabia should.
Ones with blue and purple feathers would be perfect!

Those HAVE been popular colors throughout the history of the Scalding Sands, but...they would not match the robes.

Then we should change the color of those, too! I suggest a nice peacock green.
No, wait. Maybe white would be better.

The ceremonial robes of Night Raven College are traditionally black. It has always been this way.

Yeah, but who decided that?
With everyone dressed in such a dreary color, it's like we're attending a funeral or something. Orientation is supposed to be festive, right?

Our incoming freshmen are finally starting their lives here at Night Raven College, after all.
So we need to recognize that and get into the celebratory spirit!
I've got a great idea. I'll go ask the headmage if we can make the robes a brighter color.

Right now? You can't. Orientation starts in just two hours!

I'll just ask him real quick, then! I'll be right back!

No! Wait, Kalim!
This can't be happening. He truly ran off to ask the headmage. Do I have no choice but to chase after him?
Kalim, come back! Kaliiim!

A Brighter Color (Part Two)

Interior Hallway

Pretty sure if I cut through the lecture hall, I'll get to the headmage's office faster.

Kalim! Where are you, Kalim?! ...There you are!
Kalim! Stop for a moment!

Sorry, Jamil, but we can't afford to waste time talking. We could be late for orientation!

Which is why you must stop acting on whatever whim flies into your head. Now return to the dorm and prepare for the ceremony!
...Hey, watch out!

Wha—
  • bam*

......

Owww...

Of all the people to go careening into, it had to be the housewarden of Diasomnia?!
Our sincerest apologies, Malleus! You aren't hurt, are you?

Whoops! My bad, Malleus. But I've got somewhere to be, so-

Kalim! What kind of apology is that?!

Those clothes...

Oh, you mean my robes?

Yes. I keep seeing people wearing those robes.
Housewarden Shroud of Ignihyde was in that same outfit and also seemed terribly busy.

Huh. I can't speak for what's going on with Idia, but we're off to see the headmage.
I wanna change the color of these robes.

Do you, now?

If these're worn at celebrations, then they should be a brighter color. Don't you think, Malleus?

Again, you have our most heartfelt apologies, Malleus. Come, Kalim! Put the kibosh on this ridiculous venture and return to the dorm.

It's not ridiculous! Cheery colors give off much more of a party vibe, don't they?

You are sorely mistaken, Asim. Black is a noble color, and one perfectly suited to revelry.
The legendary Thorn Fairy herself is said to have worn a black dress on the occasion of the princess's birthday.

Huh. I had no idea that was a thing.

I do not believe that flashy colors are the only way to express one's jubilation.
Many others among the Great Seven also had a fondness for black. Indeed, it is recognized around the world as a formal color.

Hmmm... Now that I think of it, didn't the Sorcerer of the Sands wear black, too?

Yes. Legends state that he wore a robe as black as the desert night.

Y'know what? Black's a pretty cool color.
I don't wear it all that often. Maybe it'll feel extra special to wear it to a celebration.

Okay! I'm gonna keep the robes like this!
Now that I look at it, the lining has a really nice hue, and the long sleeves flap when I dance! It's great!

  • sigh* Please, whatever you do, do NOT start dancing at orientation.

In any case, now we should be able to finish our preparations in the time remaining.

Cool, cool. Hey, thanks for the perspective, Malleus!

So you listen to HIS advice?!

I did nothing noteworthy. I only spoke my mind.

Yeah? You think?

Kalim, we do not have time to be standing around chatting. We must hurry back to Scarabia.
...Before another one of your whims strikes you.

Heh, fair enough. See you, Malleus!

Yes. Farewell.
Scarabia Dorm - Lounge

My robe's wrinkle-free and my shoes are clean. I'm good to go!

Those are boots, technically, but no matter.
Orientation has yet to even begin and I'm already exhausted. We are not off to a good start.

Should we head to the Mirror Chamber? This is my first major duty since becoming housewarden!
Let's go give a warm welcome to all the new members of Scarabia!

Hmm. He's finally looking presentable.

C'mon, Jamil! The freshmen are waiting for us!

Wait, Kalim! You've forgotten your magical pen!

Sorry. Oh yeah, there's a special pen holder just for these robes, too. I forgot!

  • sigh* I wish you would take a leaf from Malleus's book and try composing yourself at least a little.

Don't worry. I'm gonna knock this outta the park.
Oh, hey! Come to think of it, Malleus was still in his regular uniform, even though orientation is about to start. Wonder why.
Interior Hallway

Shroud, Asim, Viper... That makes three people I've seen today that were wearing those robes.
Is there something special going on today?
