Happy Birthday! (Part One)

Savanaclaw Dorm - Lounge

Birthday interview, huh? Wonder what the questions'll be...
Guess no one's allowed to know 'til just before. Even who the Magic Pendulum picked to do the interview's a secret.
???
Jack, don't tell me you're nervous.

As if. Quit jabberin' and get in here.

Fair enough. Happy birthday! I'll be interviewing you today.

Thanks for that. 'Course we see so much of each other this doesn't really feel special, does it?

Agreed, but at least we get to take it easy.

Good point. Just don't get so relaxed you screw things up.

Wh-what could I possibly screw up? The questions are already determined. Speaking of, let's get to the first one.
If you could use flight magic to go anywhere, where would you want to go?
And don't worry about magic capacity, it says.

I'd go see the spelldrive world championship.
Tickets cost an ear and a tail, and then factoring in transportation on top of that has always made affording it out of my reach.
But if I could fly there, wouldn't matter where they held it, I could at least GET there.
Which would still leave me needin' to get a ticket somehow, of course...

When the world championship comes around, it seems like spelldrive is on everyone's lips, fans and non-fans alike.
Did you go see a lot of matches back home?

Not really. I'd save up my allowance, and that'd get me to maybe two or three a year.
I watched every match I could on TV, but it just doesn't compare to actually bein' there.
People flyin' right in front of you at breakneck speeds, firing off all sorts of spells...
The pros are seriously incredible. Hope I can get to that level someday.
If I got a chance to see the world championship live, I bet I'd learn a thing or two.

I know what you mean. I watch a lot of blastcycle races, but you don't really know what it's like 'til you see it live.
I must say, Jack, I didn't know how serious you were about spelldrive.

It's a great sport. You need a lot of physical ability, but you need to use your wits too. Lot of magic control involved.

Spoken like a true fan who never misses a broadcast. You really are passionate about it.

Passionate? I dunno if I'd go THAT far.

Maybe you don't notice yourself, but I can see it on your face. You're positively beaming when you talk about it.

Tch, get off my tail about it already... Yeah, so what if I like spelldrive? Big whoop.

Hey, no need to get defensive... Wait, Jack—are you blushing?

Cram it!

Hah hah, no need to be embarrassed. Nothing wrong with having a passion.

Okay, I'm done talkin' 'bout this. Get to the next question!

Happy Birthday! (Part Two)

Okay, on to the next question.
What's your best subject in school?

Well, unlike a certain somebody, I try to keep my grades up in everything, but I guess I'm best at defensive magic.
Erectin' magical barriers, learnin' how to ward off attacks. It's the kinda thing you only learn as a mage, so I always get fired up for it.

Defensive magic, huh? It's nice how in that class you get practical challenges on the regular.
The lectures are tough, though. Hard subject to wrap your head around just from learning theory in a classroom.

Hm, I dunno—it usually makes sense to me. I do pretty well on the written exams.
That said, I do got a lot of work to do on the practical side of things.
It's still a struggle for me to chain together different types of spells, but I guess that's just a matter of practice.

Practice, eh. I've always been impressed with how readily you take to drilling yourself.
Like you've got no problem running the same distance over and over during track and field to get the time you want.

I mean, you gotta keep at it 'til you get better. That goes for runnin' and for studying—like with class the other day.

Class...? Oh right, when we had to hit targets with fireballs.

Yeah. A simple task in and of itself, but aiming was pretty tricky.
Flingin' around spells willy-nilly is no way to hit the mark.
You gotta calm down and take your time linin' up each shot.
'Course, knowing what you need to do and actually DOING it are two different things. Magic has that in common with sports.
But that just gives me more motivation to practice. Nothin' feels better than beatin' your past self.

Wow, I'm learning a ton from our conversation...
I finally get why I had so much trouble making my spells aim true.

You...haven't read the textbook at all, have you? 'Cause everything I just said is in there.

No way—seriously?! I don't remember that at ALL.

Ya know, your grades aren't my problem, but from next year on, classes are all battle-focused. You gotta get it together if you want to win.

R-right, I remember one of the upperclassmen mentioning as much.

Yup. Class gets divided into offense and defense, and you fight using everything you've learned. Can't wait.
Apparently the results don't directly influence your grade, but even so—what's the point of fighting if not to win?
That's why I'm so focused on getting the fundamentals down now so I can make sure I can come out on top later.

You said it. If you and I ever end up facing off, you can bet I'm not gonna roll over and make it easy for you!

Wouldn't want you to. Same goes for me.
Do me a favor and hit the books so I won't be bored the whole fight.

Happy Birthday! (Part Three)

Okay, last question.
How do you spend your days off?

I mean, I feel like I can probably guess...
Most days off I train.

Sounds about right. If I go for a run on a day off, I usually see you out there too.
Anything else?

Uh, well... I got my cactus to look after. And then getting ready for class.

I should really be more like you.
But come to think of it, I DID see you in town the other day. What were you doing?

Oh, that? I went to see if there were any new protein bars on sale.
Didn't know you'd gone to town too. Give me a shout next time.

You looked so locked in, I didn't want to get in your way.

Hmph. Mighty considerate of you.
I have my go-to protein bars, of course, but different brands and flavors have different nutritional balance.
That's why whenever I'm in town I like to check and see if anything's gotten an update or if there are new products.
They all cost about the same, so I figure I ought to get the ones that have the nutrition I need.
You can never really tell how well they'll work 'til you try, either. Everybody's different.
That's why I've been keeping plenty of notes to track my progress.

That's so...diligent.

You gotta be, to do a proper comparison.
And keepin' records also means I'll never screw up and buy one I didn't like again.

That's the end of the interview! Thanks, Jack.

Back atcha.

And now for the main event! Your flight!
Here, this is your special broom. They said the flowers on the head were chosen because they were the most "you".

Really? Feel like they're a bit gaudy for me...

You think so? For flowers they're actually pretty brawny. I think they suit you perfectly!
But forget that—it's time for your flight! You better give us a cool show!

Don't worry, I'm not one to disappoint.
Wouldn't want anyone lookin' down on me just 'cause I'm a freshman, so I aim to show 'em all what I can do.
...Right. Hope you're ready to be amazed!
