A dorm based on the Queen of Hearts' spirit of strictness. Twisted from Alice in Wonderland.
Heartslabyul is a dorm in the Night Raven College.
It's known for its long list of rules that its students are expected to abide by. Should they break even one, it will result in their beheading by the housewarden.
Students
Notable students from Heartslabyul:
All members of Heartslabyul, apart from the current housewarden, wear a marking on their face, shaped like one of the four playing card suits: heart, spade, diamond, or clover. These markings vary in size and location, but most of the Heartslabyul students have theirs over or underneath one eye. The students also appear to be assigned a specific playing card to represent them, whose suit corresponds to the marking on their face. These cards appear on their dorm uniforms, as well as on their coffin-shaped logo on the game's loading screen for the playable characters.
Dorm Uniform
The dorm uniforms feature several visual motifs from Alice in Wonderland. On the uniform's jacket is a white rose, covered in red paint. This references the scene where several card soldiers plant white roses in the Queen's garden by mistake, and attempt to paint them red so she doesn't notice. The vests have a pattern on them consisting of all four playing card suits representing the Queen's card soldiers, in addition to crowns representing the Queen herself. A chessboard pattern is also present on the standard dorm uniform. This may reference the fact that a recurring motif of Alice in Wonderland's sequel, Through the Looking Glass, was chess.
Rules of the Queen of Hearts
It is Heartslabyul tradition to uphold the rules of the Queen of Hearts. There are 810 of them in total.
- 023. One must never bring a cat to a formal affair.[1]
- 025. There must always be a tea party on the 5th day of every month.[2]
- 053. Stolen items must be replaced.[3]
- 089. Never eat a tart without the Queen's permission. [4]
- 153. The only tea you may drink in the evenings is herbal tea.[5]
- 186. Never eat a hamburger on Tuesday.[6]
- 228. Flowers in gardens must never be picked on Wednesdays. [7]
- 249. Flamingo caretakers are to don pink attire. [8]
- 256. No drinking honey-sweetened lemonade after 8 p.m.[5]
- 271. One must leave the table within fifteen minutes of completing their lunch.[6]
- 304. On days that a hedgehog sneezes, all card soldiers must sing a song together.[9]
- 339. The post-meal beverage is to be lemon tea with two sugar cubes.[6]
- 346. Croquet must not be played after 5:00pm.[10]
- 412. When you see a pair of moving glasses in the forest, never go back the way you came.[11]
- 469. When throwing a party for new friends, one must decorate with both red and white roses. [12]
- 529. If you eat steak on the night of a full moon, a cat must play the violin afterwards.[13]
- 562. One must never bring a chestnut tart to an unbirthday tea party.[14]
- 648. You must brush your teeth 2 times on nights when you eat turkey.[15]
- 703. Anyone who comes in second in a croquet tournament must serve the queen tea the next day.[16]
Other mentioned rules:
- The roses must be red during an unbirthday party.[17]
- Must not play croquet without seven-colored flamingos as mallets and a hedgehog for a ball.[17]
- The roses need to be white when the garden flowers put on their spring concert.[17]
- On an unbirthday party, spread jam on a woken-up dormouse's nose.[18]
- On an unbirthday party, coffee is strictly forbidden.[12]
- Tea is always served when celebrating anything other than a birthday.[12]
- When holding a meeting to determine prizes for a croquet tournament, the records of the proceedings must be written in blue ink.[19]
- On your birthday, you are able to speak freely, and are able to eat whatever you like.[20]
- Anything borrowed must be returned.[21]
In the original Alice in Wonderland, rule #42 was mentioned to be "All persons more than a mile high must leave the court immediately."
Trivia
- There exists a courtroom in the Heartslabyul dorm where students can be put on trial for breaking the Queen's rules. This court does not appear as a background in the game, but it is the backdrop for Riddle's Dorm Uniform SSR artwork. It is also shown in Episode of Heartslabyul.
- Ever since Riddle became the housewarden, there have been no cases of any Heartslabyul students dropping out or repeating grades. As a result, the dorm's rooms are always at full capacity.[22]
- The dorm keeps several hedgehogs and flamingos on their grounds to use for croquet matches, and dorm members are required to take care of them.
- The responsibility of tending to the animals alternates regularly between dorm members.
- If a dorm member has a close bond with the animals they're playing croquet with, they will help said member score more points.
- While not as plentiful as Savanaclaw, a number of beastmen are members of Heartslabyul; Riddle once mentions a cat beastman specifically.[13]
- In the manga, Book of Heartslabyul, several beastmen are shown as Heartslabyul students, whose species include but are not limited to rabbits, cats, and mice.
- The number of rules, 810, is a Japanese play on words; "810" can be read as ハート (heart).
- Heartslabyul dorm has its own card deck. The back of the card has an argyle pattern with two shades of red and the dorm crest in white.[23]
- In the previous year, Heartslabyul had a pirate theme for Halloween.[24]
- Heartslabyul members all smell like sweets.[25]
