It's been nice having so many people wish me a happy birthday. Yourself included! It makes me kind of nervous, though. I figured I'd be used to get-togethers like this thanks to all the unbirthday parties I attend... ...but it's different when I'm the guest of honor. Still, everybody set up this nice party for me. I'm gonna enjoy it for all it's worth! Besides, it's a veritable egg paradise in here. People really went all-out cooking for this party, and I can't way to try it all.
For sure. Obviously, I enjoy eating them, but I think they're fun to cook with, too. I figured making sunny-side-up eggs would be the easiest thing in the world—just crack it into a pan and fry it, right? But no. There's more to it. It's hard getting them to come out with the whites cooked and the yolk still runny. I practiced it a lot when I was younger. Delicate stuff. Actually, I had a fun chat with Trey about cooking with eggs just recently.
We debated the best omelet ingredient and he taught me how to make a basic custard. I've never gotten to talk shop about eggs with someone before! That was a blast. Then there was Ace off to the side, a bored look on his face as he whined about how all our egg talk was, quote, "going over his head." One of these days, I'd like to try making that custard the way Trey showed me. I'll let you know if it turns out okay. I'd love to share some with you and Grim.
Yeah, blastcycle riding. Oh, and I like to tinker around with machines. My mom's not very tech-savvy, so I've always been the one to set up all of our appliances at home. At first, I was only doing it out of necessity, since Mom refused to read instruction manuals. But over time, I actually started to enjoy it. Trouble is, people mistake my enjoyment of tinkering for an actual talent at fixing and maintaining machinery. Sometimes I get people coming up to me with broken appliances. It's kind of awkward, since it's not something I'm legitimately good at.
My dorm has this old radio and cassette player in the lounge, right? Well, I tried to turn it on and it wouldn't work. You ever hear the phrase "percussive maintenance"? As in, fixing an older appliance just by giving it a good whack? Well, I did just that without expecting anything, and lo and behold, it suddenly came on. Unfortunately for me, Cater happened to see it. He ran off telling everyone, "Deucey worked a miracle!" He was half-joking, but still. Word got around, the rumor got exaggerated, and the next thing I knew, even my friends were coming up to me to talk about it. They were all like, "You can fix machines, huh? That's so cool!" How I wish I'd never touched that old cassette player!
Well, if it's not machine-related, what career path are you interested in?
I want to be a police officer. There's this elite anti-mage division I have my eye on. I know that's not an easy field to get into, but I won't let that stop me. I'm doing everything I can now to make sure I can get there eventually. That includes applied magic and flight training. I also review my lectures every day. My written exam grades aren't great, but, uh... Slow and steady wins the race, right?
I've put most of my effort into media research! I watch movies and TV shows featuring cops to study how they conduct investigations and take down perps. I've also memorized intense-looking running styles for pursuing suspects and cool-sounding one-liners to use when making an arrest. You see? I'm totally prepared to hit the beat running.
Lately I've been playing a lot of cards with my dorm friends. I used to be so hung up on blastcycles that I rarely played games with my friends. But now I'm really enjoying it. I play phone games sometimes, even. Like ones where you build a city, or ones where you slay monsters. Oh, there was this puzzle game that got pretty popular in the dorm for a while. You match colors together to make them disappear. The rules are easy to follow, and it's fun to play.
But more and more students kept pulling all- nighters to beat their high scores and such... Then they didn't get up on time, and Riddle gave all of them the "Off with your head!" treatment. A lot of people got hit by that. I was one of them, actually. I got so worked up playing against Ace, we ended up playing until the sun came up. I'd vowed to get serious about school, but old habits die hard. I've learned my lesson. I've stuck to an hour-a-day limit for games ever since.
Doing physical training, mostly. Jack's in the Track Club with me, and we're both frequent users of the sports field. We train separately, but when we're close by, we end up competing in whatever we're doing. So I'll go in planning on a light workout, but then end up in a full-blown competition. Some days, I run dozens of laps before I realize it.
In the end, we'll both wear ourselves out to the point of exhaustion. Kind of a silly way to spend a day I'm supposed to be resting, I know. Epel's been joining me lately, too. You'd never guess it by looking at him, but he's got a whole lot of grit. I used to love going out blastcycle riding with my buddies, but running's just as fun. I feel way more accomplished going running with friends than running alone. It's pretty great. But, uh, it's not like I ONLY train on my days off. I put serious effort into studying, too!
Thank you for the interview, Deuce. That was a very insightful chat. And happy birthday again!
