Culinary Crucible – Deuce Making Mackerel Curry (Part One)

Ghost Chef
Okay, wash your hands, and then we’ll gat crackin’!

Actually... I’d like to get your thoughts on something before we start.

Ghost Chef
What is it? Ask away!

I want to cook for my mom the next time I visit her.
But I’ve never cooked anything before. What do you think she’d like?

Ghost Chef
What a caring son! The trick is to cook from the heart. That’s what’ll make your mom happy.

The heart? I was hoping for more something a little more concrete, like...a specific recipe?

Ghost Chef
Not clicking for you, huh? Then let’s hear what our other student has to say.

So, you’ve called me over because you want to know what to cook for your mother?

Yes, sir. Do you have any suggestions on what I could make for her?

You shouldn’t be asking us that. An idea should come to you when you think about the person you’re cooking for.

I’m not sure I get what you mean...

Think about it this way. You must remember some of the dishes your mom’s made you, right?
What did she cook for your birthday? Or when you were sick?

She’d always cook egg dishes for my birthday. And she’d make porridge when I was sick--- I could eat that even when nothing else would stay down.
Oh, I get it now. Mom thought about me, and then would make my favorite foods or thing that were easy to eat.
That’s what the chef meant when he said to cook from the heart!

Most likely. Okay, I’m going to get back to my own work now.

Sure, thanks alot!

Ghost Chef
Thanks, Jamil! There, wasn’t that solid advice?

Absolutely! Now I know what Mom means when she says she add a pinch of love to her cooking.
I’ll keep that advice in mind when I cook for her!

Ghost Chef
That’s the spirit. Now onto your assignment. You’ll be making mackerel curry today.

Huh. We’re using fish? I usually associate curry with beef or chicken.

Ghost Chef
We’ll be using a whole can of mackerel for this dish.
Mackerel’s savoriness goes well with the curry spices! And it’s full of calcium and omega-3 fatty acids, making it a healthy option.

So it’s good AND good for you. All right, I’m gonna master this recipe!

Ghost Chef
Start by chopping the vegetables, then peel and dice the carrots.

Uh... Dice? Are you saying to throw them like dice?

Ghost Chef
No,no, I mean chop ‘em into chunks. Y’know, as opposed to slicing them. Here, I’ll show you.
You roll the carrots around like this, angle your knife diagonally, and cut ‘em into bite-sized pieces.

Oh! A roly-poly cut!

Ghost Chef
Well, I’ve never heard it called that before, but sure. Whatever floats your boat.

That’s what my mom calls it. I didn’t know there was another word for it.

Ghost Chef
I guess it’d be more fun for a kid to say. Well, go on, then! Get chopping!

Yes, sir!

Ghost Chef
Hey, that’s some mighty fine choppin’! Did you do a lot of cooking at home?

I just helped my mom a little. I’ve done the roly-poly cut—ah, I mean, I’ve “diced” vegetables before.

Ghost Chef
I see, I see. You’ve got a knack for this, kid. Now I’m excited to see how it turns out!
Let’s chop up the other ingredients.

Yes, sir!
15 minutes later...

Ghost Chef
Next, put the sautéed vegetables and mackerel into the pot and bring to a boil.

Got it!
Oh, hey... Jamil’s filleting his fish.
(Look at how he handles the knife. That’s so cool! It’s like he knows exactly what he’s doing. I wanna cook like that one day!)
Chef, could I ask a favor? I’d like to learn how to fillet a fish!
I mean, not NOW, of course. But I’d love to do it at some point during the program.

Ghost Chef
What an eager beaver! All right, how’d you like to give it a go right now?

Really?!

Ghost Chef
We’ll fillet a mackerel, sauté it until it’s nice and crispy, then top your curry with it.
Now, filleting a fish is no easy task. You sure you’re up for the challenge?

Yes, sir! Absolutely!

Culinary Crucible – Deuce Making Mackerel Curry (Part Two)

Whoa, this fish is slippery!

Ghost Chef
It’ll be less slippery if you put it on a cloth or paper towel. Okay, Carefully, now. Keep your left hand steady.

Right! ...Whew, this is hard.

Ghost Chef
I’m sure your dear ol’ ma would be over the moon if she saw you workin’ so hard.

I hope so... *sigh*

Ghost Chef
Is something the matter?

My mom told me the other day that she’d been laid up in bed with a bad cold.
But she didn’t bother to tell me that until after fully recovered.
I get that she doesn’t want to scare me, but I kinda wish she’d lean on me more when she’d struggling.
So the next time I visit, I want to cook for her and show that I’m more dependable than ever!

Ghost Chef
  • sniffle* Aww, that’s so sweet!
Sounds like you better roll up your sleeves then! The next step’s to lay the blade flat and cut into the fish from the back.

Let’s see. Hold the tail down frimly and slowly slide the knife in... Ack!
Part of it tore off. Now there’s this thin, flappy piece.

Ghost Chef
Don’t worry, happens to everyone their first go-round. No need to panic. just move the knife carefully and don’t push too hard.

Yessir! I’ll start from where the bit tore off.

Ghost Chef
(The kid’s got potential. This program might be just the learning experience he needs!)

I was nominated to be a judge for the Culinary Crucible, but I have yet to know whose cooking I’ll be evaluating.

Ah, you must be my judge, Sebek. Thanks for taking the time.

Oho, so you’re the one who made my meal. Be warned, for I shall be exacting in my critique.

That’s totally fine. Hit me with your most honest feedback! Here’s the mackerel curry I made.

Hmm... It looks and smells passable enough. As for how it tastes...
Hm... Surprising...

(He’s not saying much. At least he didn’t just spit it out or anything. So far, so good...)

Hm? What’s with this flimsy piece of mackerel? A most odd cut.

Oh, that’s the first piece I filleted. It tore off while I was cutting it.
I gotta tell you, filleting a fish is pretty tough. This was my first time doing it, and it was kind of a mess.

Heh. I’m sure it was.

Did you just snort at me? Well, can YOU fillet a fish?

I used to go camping with my family, and we’d catch fish at the riverside. I know all about how to handle them.

Oof. Thanks for reminding me I’m such a noob...
Well, I’ll keep practicing until I can fillet a fish in my sleep!

Ghost Chef
That’s what I like to hear! Ahh, nothing motivates a teacher more than a keen learner!

If you require fish with which to practice, I could do you the favor of taking you fishing sometime.

I’ll keep it in the kitchen, Chef. And I appreciate that, Sebek!
All right, time to get back to it! I’m gonna work harder than ever!
