Baur Zigvolt first appears in Book 7 during Lilia's dream. He is under Lilia's troop and is Sebek's grandfather.
Appearance[]
Baur has dark green spiky hair. He has notable features of a fae, such as reptile-like eyes and sharp ears. He has small fangs peeking out from behind his upper lip. He has dark green scales along his jawline. He carries a stern demeanor, given his standing as a soldier. He sometimes wears a mask resembling a crocodile.
He wears a full hunter green armor set composed of both leather and metal (the exact material is unknown, but is confirmed to not be iron). His pauldrons, breastplate, gauntlets, and from his kneecaps down to his sabatons are made of metal. His long tassets are donned with an unknown material resembling scales on its insides.
Personality[]
From the way he thinks and speaks, Baur is the spitting image of his grandson Sebek demonstrating a personality loud, hot-blooded, and prideful. He worked with great commitment and pride as a soldier of Maleanor with the help of Lilia, proving himself to be a strong and serious support on the battlefields. Since he lived as a soldier in an era where humans and fae fought battled each other, Baur displays an attitude of hate towards humans, primarily to Sebek who claims to be his grandson.[1]
His contempt for humans is so strong that he repeatedly refuses to eat the food prepared from Silver and Sebek's group, before being convinced to give up. However, he is also an honest person and will openly acknowledge others for their talents or attitude.
In fact, although with great difficulty, he recognized Sebek as a valiant and talented person who possessed the necessary requirements to wear the armor of the royal guard.
Like Sebek, he greatly respects Lilia e and the Draconia family, showing his more gentle and polite side when addressing them. While he still doesn't like humans, Baur to have "mellowed out" since his daughter brought her human husband to Briar Valley.
While he doesn't approve of his daughter's union with a human, Baur has never taken it out on his grandchildren. Since he was a child, Sebek says that when he went to visit his grandfather, while appearing unfriendly and severe, he always made sure to have children's books in the house and snacks that he himself would never eat.
For this reason he feels immense respect and love for his grandfather, despite the tense relationship with the rest of the family and his conflicting feelings of hatred towards humans.
Background[]
Not much is known about Baur except that in his youth he moved from Sunset Savanna to Briarland and, according to Lilia, had an 'honorable' education. [2]
When his country was caught in the fire of war, Baur fought fiercely alongside Lilia, at the time known as a renowned hero and General of the Right under the command of Princess Maleanor.
He was at his side in numerous battles to protect his country and was with him when Maleanor gave his last order to escape and protect Malleus and later vehemently protested to protect him from the Senate, eager to have Lilia discharged from office. A completely useless act; blinded by the pain of his loss, in fact, Lilia agreed despite Baur's protests and his attempts to put him off.
Ten years after the fall of the crown princess and the birth of Briar Valley, Baur was sent on a mission by Queen Maleficia as a secret messenger to contact Lilia.
Following an initial refusal to get involved, Baur managed to convince Lilia to be heard when he warned him of the imminent danger Malleus'life, who was slowly dying because he had begun to reject the magical power -and life support- that Maleficia was administering to make him live and hatch from the egg.
After more than two centuries, Lilia managed to hatch Malleus and Baur, once again, was there to assist and defend him when the Senate denigrated his sacrifice with accusations and verbal insults.
At some unspecified point in the past he took over from Lilia as General until stepping down to become an advisor to Queen Maleficia and had a daughter. To his great chagrin, however, she fell in love with and married a human despite the terrible protests she got from him and the rest of fae society.
Even today relations with his family are still tense, but it seems he is slowly coming to terms with the whole thing by allowing a family dinner once a year and no longer escorting his son-in-law out the door, even though he considers him a "fragile human being".[3]
Sebek claims that Baur never rejected his grandchildren and he never failed to care for them in his own way. When Sebek expressed his desire to become a guard, Baur intercepted Lilia and asked the favor of training him.[4]
